The World in Maps: Mathematics and Cartography in the Digital Age

Jerrold Tunnell (Mathematics)

Mathematicians proved centuries ago that the curved surface of the globe could not be reproduced on a flat map in such a way that all distances and areas are preserved. This has not stopped mapmakers from depicting portions of the earth in various ways in flat maps or flat screens. The seminar will study approaches to this problem in the past, as well as new solutions brought by recent technology.
