The Internet of Things: Promises and Perils

Today, we can interact remotely with heating systems in our houses via cellphone, refrigerators can tell us what to buy at the market, and cars can tell us when they need servicing. This seminar will discuss current and future capabilities, uses and misuses of interconnected “smart devices,” and include topics such as: IOT security, (from attack, and in reliability of operation and data); design of IOT devices; programming IOT devices; smart cars and other large (and dangerous) IOT devices; interactions, failure-modes and fault-tolerant behaviors; smart cities and current plans to use IOT devices to track and control services.
