Sacred Number: How Science and Art Create the Magic of Numbers

Jeff Friedman (Dance)

It is amazing how much numbers shows up in our daily lives.  Where does "number" come from and why is it so embedded in nearly everything we do?  We approach the concept of numbers in different ways, from science, the humanities, art and architecture. In this seminar, we will look historically at why numbers are sacred in different cultures; why numbers are “lucky” and “unlucky”; and how systems of measurement like the “cubit” and the “megalithic yard” are based on body parts. You don't have to love math to take this course; you do need to be curious about how we developed unusual literary, tactile, and philosophical ways to create and develop something so basic and fundamental to our lives as "Number."
