Political Islam and Citizenship in the Digital Age

Eric Davis (Political Science)

This seminar asks: What is political Islam? Can it help promote democratization in the Middle East or does it contribute primarily to political violence and the suppression of tolerance, cultural diversity, and individual rights?  Students will investigate a variety of topics surrounding modern political Islam, including its impact on citizenship in Muslim majority countries and the role of social media in promoting both democratic and radical Islamist agendas. We will also consider the counter reactions by groups that oppose establishing an Islamic state, whether grounded in democratic principles or radical interpretations of Islam.
