Neurobiology of Drug Addiction
This course will explore addiction with a focus on neurobiological explanations of addictive behaviors. We will create hypotheses and draw conclusions from lab research, including explorations of brain activity records of animal models using cocaine through self-administration. Understanding the neural underpinnings of addiction begins with understanding the behavioral and cognitive processes of the drug user, which most students will have observed at some point in their everyday lives. We will begin early discussions by looking at useful web sites and various personal narratives of addiction before delving into current research in the field.
