Living the Good Life: Creating the College Bucket List

Xenia Morin (Plant Biology and Pathology)
Alan Robock (Environmental Sciences)

How do you know if research will be on your college bucket list?  This seminar was inspired by a 2015 New York Times article, “How to Live Wisely,” by Richard Light, and a new book, Design Your Life, by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans. In this seminar, you will examine questions like: What does it mean to live a good life? To live a productive life? To live a happy life? Not only will you discuss these questions, but you will also use this seminar to learn how you can design your college experience—YOUR college bucket list. You will examine your values and what matters to you. You will be encouraged to explore answers both inside and outside of the classroom—including academic and research options—so that you might realize your goals by making your plans for your college experience.  We will explore the science of happiness, and then put it into practice by experiencing the joy of field trips involving food, music, scientific discussions and more. By sharing our stories and research, as well as how we strive to have a happy and meaningful life, we hope to awaken you to the possibilities of doing the same.
