Japanese Gardens: Art and Healing

Seiko Goto (Landscape Architecture)

This course engages students to explore the complex relationships between people and the environment by focusing on two affective responses generated by Japanese gardens: restoration and empowerment.  Through readings, discussion, lectures, and student work, the class will examine different places that evoke these responses either intentionally or unintentionally.  We will look at historical and contemporary gardens which are used for restoring the mind, and study the cultural and historical backgrounds that influenced their design.
