Gems and Mineral Collecting

Jill Van Tongeren (Earth and Planetary Sciences)

Gems and minerals have had a special place in society from the dawn of civilization. This seminar will be conducted during three day-long adventures. During one trip we will visit the Gems and Minerals exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC, meet the Curator, and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the collections of the museum that are not typically on display for the public.  In a second trip we will visit the Gemological Institutes of America in NYC and see how diamonds are inspected and graded for the jewelry industry.  Our final trip will be a visit to the Franklin Mine in New Jersey where we will be able to tour the mine, and prospect for gems and hunt for minerals in region known for its UV-fluorescent minerals.
