Beyond Starving Babies: Understanding West Africa Through Film

What do you think of when you hear the word “Sahel”? For many of us, the image we have of this region of Africa stretching from Senegal to Sudan is of starving babies and desert sands. In this course we will draw upon the many thoughtful documentaries and feature films focusing on North Africa to try to understand the reasons for endemic malnutrition, but also to appreciate the landscape, economy, and lifeways of the people who live in this challenging but beautiful region.
