Art, Anthropology, and the Movies in 1914
This course is about the restoration of a 1914 silent feature film, In the Land of the Head Hunters, one of the first movies to feature an all-Native American cast and the first for which we have an extant musical score. It will feature conversations with film restoration technicians, musicians, historians, and anthropologists who were involved in the project and who will share their expertise. Students will come away with an introduction to silent-era motion pictures, an in-depth understanding of the process by which films from the silent film era have been preserved, and an increased awareness of the role played by Native Americans in the invention of modern cinema.
